Prebiotic Mannan Oligosaccharide Pretreatment Improves Mice Survival Against Lethal Effects of Gamma Radiation by Protecting GI Tract and Hematopoietic Systems

Total body irradiation (TBI) results in critical injuries a dose dependent manner that primarily damages highly proliferating tissues including hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and intestinal crypt etc. This may result syndrome leading to bone marrow failure gastrointestinal chronic functional alterations. Death from the due sepsis, bleeding, dehydration, multi-system organ failure. We demonstrate prebiotic mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) pretreatment substantially prolongs survival both male female mice when administered 2 h prior radiation either through oral or intraperitoneal route. The radioprotective efficacy of MOS was found be age improves even aged (12–13 months old). effectively abrogates radiation-induced injury accelerates recovery lymphocytes WBCs alleviates depletion circulatory blood cells. Results also illustrate abolishes cell death denudation villi comparison respective irradiated animals ameliorates overall damage GI system. facilitates enhanced animal demonstrating its protection against TBI induced mortality.
